The Hobart Hurricanes lost in a DLS affected thriller, falling to the Stars in the final over after some Glenn Maxwell brilliance. Needing 67 off 7 overs after the Hurricanes set 155, Maxwell showed all his class in a brilliant chase.
Losing the toss and batting first, Hobart named an unchanged starting XI from the win against the Renegades 5 days earlier. Unfortunately, Matthew Wade was unable to repeat his heroics from the previous fixture, removed in the first over by former Hurricane Joel Paris.
However, Mac Wright looked in excellent touch again, and quickly began taking apart the Stars bowling lineup. Caleb Jewell played the foil role as Wright exploded - and despite falling in the sixth over, added 33 runs off just 19 balls at a strike rate of 173.68 - including 5 boundaries.
Sam Hain joined Caleb Jewell who then took it upon himself to accelerate, with the powerful left-hander entertaining his home crowd and taking the 'Canes past 80, before Melbourne Stars captain Glenn Maxwell began to change the game.
The Big Show had Sam Hain caught, before trapping Jewell and incoming batter Tim David lbw in the space of three overs, with Hobart now in a little hot water at 5-96. Jewell walked off a notable 45 to his name - at a clip of 121.62.
Maxwell turned fielder to catch Corey Anderson, before Nikhil Chaudhary took it upon himself to pull Hobart out of trouble, playing inventive shots and displaying raw power to blast a quickfire 32 off just 16 balls - a critical effort to lift his side to 7-132.
The bowlers managed to chip in a handful of runs themselves, before the innings ended with the 'Canes all out for 155.
After rain delayed play, DLS determined the Stars required 67 off 7 overs, and the Hurricanes made the dream start, with Riley Meredith snaring two wickets in the opening over, much to the delight of the raucous crowd who had braved the weather.
With Marcus Stoinis and Sam Harper gone, Nathan Ellis stepped up next, clean bowling Hilton Cartwright and nearly lifting the roof off Blundstone Arena, with the Stars in total shock at 3-6.
Unfortuantely, Maxwell decided it was time to take over the game, and with a flurry of boundaries, tilted momentum back the way of the Stars. Ably supported by Tom Rogers, Maxwell brought the chase down to a run a ball, and eventually snared the winning runs with three balls to spare.
