Smith inks two-year deal with Hurricanes

Tasmanian teenage spin sensation, Amy Smith, is the latest Hurricane to re-commit to the club, inking a two-year deal which will see her remain in purple until at least 2023.

The 16-year-old shone in her debut WBBL season, lining up for all 13 matches the Hurricanes played, and finishing as the club’s third-highest wicket-taker (tied with opening quick, Belinda Vakarewa), finishing with eight wickets to her name at an average of 28.62.

Originally called into the squad for the injured Maisy Gibson, the then 15-year-old embraced her opportunity, bamboozling her considerably more senior opposition with the ball, with her scalps including international talents Ashleigh Gardner, Erin Burns, Lizelle Lee and Tahlia McGrath.

Smith said she was excited to get another WBBL season under her belt with the Hurricanes.

“It’s a bit of a strange feeling as although I now have a season under my belt, I still feel a little like I’m not sure what to expect this season, with my only WBBL experience being living in a bubble.

“However, on-field, I think I know a lot more about what to expect now, so I’ll focus on that, and hopefully and we’ll get to play our matches here in Tasmania, which I’m really looking forward to.”

Smith joins Gibson, Rachel Priest, Chloe Rafferty, Molly Strano, Belinda Vakarewa and Tayla Vlaeminck as the players contracted to the Hurricanes thus far for WBBL|07.
